يتناول النص الذكاء الاصطناعي بوصفه فرعاً من العلوم والهندسة متخصصاً في صنع آلات ذكية قادرة على التفكير ومحاكاة الذكاء البشري. بدأ المجال بالروبوتات ثم توسّع ليشمل العوامل البرمجية. وقد انطلقت الشرارة الأولى عام 1950 حين أُجري أول اختبار لقدرة الآلة على إظهار سلوك ذكي. وفي تسعينيات القرن الماضي ظهر مفهوم العامل الذكي وتوسّع ليشمل الصحة والأمن والتعليم والفن. غير أن الذكاء الاصطناعي لا يزال محدوداً في تطبيقات بعينها، وتعتريه قيود في الحس المشترك والذكاء العاطفي. ويرى الكاتب أن المخاوف من تأثير التكنولوجيا ينبغي ألا تُعيق تقدم الذكاء الاصطناعي، بل تدفع نحو تطوير إطار منهجي يُتيح له الازدهار.
